What Is a Metal Allergy?

Symptoms, causes, and how to find jewelry that works for you.

"My ears started itching whenever I wore earrings."

"My necklace leaves my skin red and irritated."

"I never had this problem before. Why is it happening now?"

Have you ever experienced something like this?

For the past 17 years, Sache has received countless messages from people struggling with metal allergies and sensitive skin.

One of the most common things we hear is:

> **"I used to be fine... but suddenly I can't wear earrings anymore."**

Many people believe metal allergies are something you're born with.

In reality, they can develop at any stage of life.

In this article, I'd like to explain how metal allergies work, why they sometimes appear suddenly, and share my own personal experience living with a severe metal allergy.

I Have a Severe Metal Allergy Myself

This isn't just something I've studied.

It's something I've lived with.

Years ago, I underwent a **patch test** at a dermatology clinic.

The area exposed to nickel reacted so severely that the skin broke down, following the exact shape of the cotton pad used in the test.

The scar is still there today.

To investigate further, I also chose to undergo a **Drug-Induced Lymphocyte Stimulation Test (DLST/LST)**, a blood test that was not covered by insurance.

This test measures how strongly your lymphocytes (a type of immune cell) react when exposed to specific metal ions.

My results showed:

* **Palladium: 1064%**
* **Gold: 327%**

Seeing those numbers was shocking.

At that moment, I honestly wondered,

> **"Maybe I'll never be able to wear earrings again."**

Interestingly, necklaces and bracelets rarely caused me any problems.

It was **earrings** that I simply couldn't wear.

Because earrings pass directly through a pierced hole in the skin, I personally believe that this area was much more sensitive in my case.

Searching for Earrings That Wouldn't Hurt

Even so, I wasn't ready to give up.

I tried almost everything I could find.

* Earrings labeled "hypoallergenic"
* Plastic (resin) earrings
* Surgical stainless steel earrings
* Titanium earrings

None of them worked for me.

The resin earrings caused bleeding when I removed them.

The surgical stainless steel earrings made my ears swell.

Even the titanium earrings caused irritation.

Eventually, I gave up wearing earrings altogether.

Whenever I saw someone enjoying beautiful earrings,

I remember thinking,

> **"I wish I could wear them too."**

The Earrings My Mother Found

Then one day, my mother said,

> **"I found something called pure titanium earrings."**

She had discovered a small online shop and bought a pair for me.

To be honest, I wasn't very hopeful.

I thought,

> **"This probably won't work either."**

Still, I carefully put them on.

Then...

Nothing happened.

No itching.

No swelling.

No pain.

I couldn't believe it.

> **"I can wear earrings again."**

That feeling of relief and happiness is something I'll never forget.

What Is a Metal Allergy?

A metal allergy occurs when **metal ions**, released from metal through sweat or moisture, trigger an immune response.

These metal ions bind to proteins in the skin.

The immune system may then mistake this combination for a harmful substance, causing inflammation.

Symptoms may include:

* Itching
* Redness
* Swelling
* Eczema
* Blisters

The severity varies greatly from person to person.

Why Can Symptoms Suddenly Appear?

Many people assume that metal allergies are something you're born with.

However, that's not always the case.

Repeated exposure to an allergen can gradually **sensitize** the immune system.

Once that sensitization reaches a certain point, symptoms may suddenly appear.

A common way to explain this is the **"cup theory."**

Imagine your immune system as a cup.

Every exposure to an allergen adds another drop.

Eventually, the cup overflows—and symptoms begin.

While this is only a simplified illustration, many people find it helpful in understanding why they were perfectly fine for years before suddenly developing a metal allergy.

At Sache, we often hear stories like these:

* "I never had problems when I was younger."
* "Everything changed after giving birth."
* "My ears suddenly became sensitive in my forties."

These experiences are far more common than many people realize.

Common Symptoms of Metal Allergy

Symptoms vary from person to person.

Some people experience only mild itching, while others develop more severe reactions.

Common symptoms include:

* Itchy piercings
* Redness
* Swelling
* Weeping skin
* Eczema
* Blisters

Metal allergies don't affect only earrings.

Necklaces, rings, watches, belt buckles, and other metal accessories that come into contact with the skin can also trigger reactions.

In my own case, however, earrings were by far the biggest problem.

Why the Label "Hypoallergenic" Doesn't Tell the Whole Story

Today, many accessories are marketed as **"hypoallergenic."

However, there is no single universal standard for what that label means.

For example, a product may be described as hypoallergenic because it is:

* Nickel-free
* Made from surgical stainless steel
* Made with titanium

The meaning varies depending on the manufacturer and the materials used.

That's why the label alone cannot tell you whether a piece of jewelry will be suitable for your skin.

The most important thing is understanding **what materials are actually used.**

Every Material Has Its Own Characteristics

Jewelry is made from many different materials.

Gold.

Silver.

Platinum.

Pure titanium.

Surgical stainless steel.

Each has its own advantages, and each is a good choice for many people.

But there is **no single material that is guaranteed to be safe for everyone.**

In my own case, even gold—which many people consider a "safe" material—showed a positive reaction in my blood test.

At the same time, someone else may be able to wear gold without any problems at all.

This is why choosing jewelry isn't about finding **the most popular material.**

It's about finding **the material that works for you.**

Why Sache Places So Much Importance on Material Information

Because I personally struggled to find earrings I could wear, I understand how confusing material labels can be.

I learned through experience that simply seeing the words

> **"Hypoallergenic"**

doesn't always tell you everything you need to know.

At Sache, we mainly offer earrings with **pure titanium posts or hooks**—the parts that pass directly through the piercing.

To preserve each design, however, decorative elements may be made from other materials such as brass or resin.

Rather than saying,

> **"Pure titanium is the answer for everyone,"**

we believe it's more important to tell customers exactly **which materials are used** so they can make informed decisions based on their own skin and experiences.

Transparency has always been one of Sache's most important values.

I Don't Want Anyone to Give Up on Wearing Earrings

There was a time when I truly believed I would never wear earrings again.

So I understand how heartbreaking that feeling can be.

The truth is, pure titanium isn't the right answer for everyone.

Some people wear surgical stainless steel comfortably.

Some react to gold.

Others react to titanium.

Metal allergies are deeply personal.

That's why I never want to say,

> **"This material is perfect for everyone."**

Instead, I hope people can discover

> **"the material that is right for them."**

Because once you do, it may become possible to enjoy earrings again.

Final Thoughts

Metal allergies occur when your immune system reacts to metal ions released from certain metals.

They can develop suddenly—even after years of wearing the same jewelry without any problems.

There is no universal "best" material.

Every material has its own characteristics, and every person's body is different.

Understanding the materials used in your jewelry is the first step toward finding what truly works for you.

If you're reading this because you've been thinking,

> **"Maybe I'll never be able to wear earrings again."**

Please don't lose hope.

I once felt exactly the same way.

Finding pure titanium changed my life.

Your answer may be different from mine—and that's okay.

What matters is finding the material that lets **you** enjoy wearing jewelry comfortably again.
